My Top 10 Summer Movies (via Netflix)

July 10, 2013

top10summermoviesAfter spending a long, hot day at the beach or on a day trip, who doesn’t love coming home, putting on some breezy boxers and curling up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and a classic summertime film? I’ve rounded up my top 10 favorite summertime movies currently on Netflix so that you don’t have to waste time browsing through the endless options. But I’d still love to know; what are some of your favorite summertime movies?

1(500) Days of summer
Why: With a title that consists of the word summer, it had to be on my list. Not only is this movie charming and funny, the soundtrack featuring this song makes it one of my favorite movies to sing along to on a summer night.

2The Descendants
Why: A heart-felt movie with an all-star cast. Although the story line in this movie is heavy on the heart, the scenery that surrounds it (Oahu and Kauai) is perfect for a summer flick. If you’re looking for a movie to watch with your family this summer The Descendants should be it. Just make sure you have a box of tissues ready.

3Soul Surfer
Why: Okay, I realize this movie may deter you from jumping into the ocean this summer, but Bethany Hamilton played by AnnaSophia Robb, will give you faith and inspire you to never give up on a dream.

4Eat, Pray, Love
Why: Summer is all about getting lost and finding yourself. And that is exactly what Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) sets out to do on her journey to Italy, India and Bali. Remember; all of those who wonder are not lost. This movie mixes two of my favorite things; eating and travelling. For those reasons Eat, Pray, Love is one of my top 10 choices.

U_1Sheet (Page 1)Georgia Rule
Why: If you’re looking to watch a movie that has an unexpected twist, Georgia Rule is the perfect choice. In the hot summer of a mormon town in Idaho, Rachel, an out-of-control teen, is sent to live with her grandmother after crashing her step-fathers car. Not there for a day and the secrets start spilling out.  From alcoholism to a secret Rachel is keeping from her mother, this movie is full of turns that are sinful, funny and sexy.

6The Beach
Why:  Leonardo DiCaprio without a shirt, A mysterious island off the coast of Thailand, Leonardo DiCaprio without a shirt. Need I say more? A movie that consists of an unspoiled island with a community living off the land had to be on my summertime top 10. Oh, and did I mention, Leonardo DiCaprio without a shirt?

7The Upside of Anger
Why: Although this movie would be good to watch at any time of the year, It would be especially enjoyable to watch with a cold glass of wine and your sisters or girlfriends on a rainy summer evening. The film also has an unexpected twist at the end that you will not see coming!

8Vicky Cristina, Barcelona
Why: What is a summertime movie list without Woody Allen? I contemplated putting several of his movies on here but opted for just Vicky Cristina Barcelona, a movie that my sisters and I find fascinating. The romantic comedy centers around American women Vicky and Cristina who both fall for artist, Juan Antonio and are quick to discover that he is still enthralled by his crazy ex-wife María Elena.

9
Spanglish
Why: I know some people have mixed feelings about Spanglish. And although the movies actual story line may be unclear, there are many memorable scenes that make for a good watch on a day when it’s too hot to go outside and there really is nothing more appealing than watching a quirky movie. The characters are all different and it’s fun to watch their dynamic play out on-screen. For this reason, I am one (of the few?) who can appreciate Spanglish.

10Blue Crush
Why: For my second surfer movie and final pick, I have chosen none other than Blue Crush. If you are looking for body motivation this summer then check out Kate Bosworth and her girlfriends in bikinis and you will surely want to hit the ocean, or at-least the gym. I think we can all agree, Blue Crush is our guilty summer movie pleasure.
