Today, we are so excited to reveal Caitlin’s master bedroom renovation as part of the 2017 One Room Challenge! If you haven’t been following along, be sure to check out her previous updates (complete with “before” pictures) linked at the bottom of the post. For the past six weeks, Caitlin’s been giving her master bedroom a dramatic facelift—from new flooring to an organized closet, built-in shelves and new trim. It’s finally a space she can relax in and enjoy. Get all the details below!
I’m so relieved that our bedroom makeover is complete! I learned so much in the past six weeks (including I never want to take on another drastic renovation in such a short period of time)! But, in the end it was all worth it to finally have my dream bedroom. We bought our house one year ago and our bedroom had been neglected since then—I’m talking gross carpet, no trim, awful lighting, broken blinds—the list goes on and on. It had no design, color palette or sense of cohesiveness and was simply a place for all the lost pieces of furniture in our house to go! Now, it’s bright, light, airy and cozy at the same time! I’ll walk you through each part of the renovation and share some “before” pictures in case you forgot. Brace yourself, as this is a long post, but I’ll cover all the sources and changes we made!
First up, we ripped out the cheap carpet and had our contractor install beautiful maple hardwood flooring from Mohawk (Mohawk is having a great sale right now through the end of the month that you can check out here). It made such a drastic difference and I’m hoping to put it in my daughter’s room and playroom next! During this process, we ran into a few issues that you can read about here, but ultimately we had the double doors that lead to our deck replaced with a simple sliding door from Home Depot. This was an unexpected cost, but really worth it because the slider lets in so much light and the doors were old, funky and needed to be replaced anyway.

Instead of blinds, we opted for floor-to-ceiling curtains from The Shade Store, and my husband and I both love how easy it is to pull them closed for privacy and to block out light at night. It’s so much easier than dealing with the cheap blinds we had up prior that always ended up closed, thus blocking out all the pretty light we get! We ordered samples and it was really hard to select a color, but ended up going with the Tailored Pleat Drapes in a linen blend (the color is Alabaster). I opted for a sleek and simple rod, the Madison in a gold finish.
We also had our contractor install baseboards and crown molding from Metrie—talk about transformation! I absolutely love how it turned out. I spent many hours spackling the nail holes, sanding and painting all of the trim in the room. I went with Farrow & Ball in ‘All White’ for the trim of the room and Farrow & Ball ‘Cornforth White’ for the walls. It’s the perfect light gray that’s not too dark. The piece of art above was painted by my great-grandmother and framed by Framebridge.
We have a little nook in the corner of our room that my husband had shoved an old table and used as a desk area. In case you forgot, here’s what it looked like.
Now we have pretty built-in shelves! These were styled for the photos (obviously), but I imagine they’ll be full of books by the end of the week! My dad built the shelves and I painted them to match the trim. The vase in the top left corner is from The Mine and the artwork is from Target.
Next up was our closet! I thought this would be a relatively easy project, but it turned into one of the most complicated and frustrating! Previously, we had a standard reach-in closet, complete with cheap wire shelves that looked like they were about to fall at any moment. We ripped out the bottom section when we moved in and placed an oversized dresser in its place. I often tried to keep my jewelry, perfume and sweaters on top of the dresser, but as you can imagine, it was hard to keep organized or even see with clothes hanging down! We removed the horrible accordion doors when we moved in as well, and I had replaced them with a curtain. When I took the “before” photo, we had already removed all of the interior structures in the closet when we did our bathroom renovation about a month prior, as we used some of the closet space on the right side to create a closet in our bathroom. Phew, what a mess!
I designed a relatively simple closet and had our contractor build it. He didn’t do a great job and my dad had to re-do the interior (so thankful for him)! I ordered the drawers from Home Depot and replaced the hardware that made them look really dated with this sleek Bar Pull in a gold finish from Emtek. My dad also installed four True Craft doors from Metrie that we installed the Urban Modern Freestone Finger Pull from Emtek in a gold finish. I love finally having a working closet that is also ORGANIZED! While I dream of having a walk-in closet one day, I’m really pleased with how we maximized the space in our builder’s grade reach-in closet while also making it appealing to the eye.
We finally got rid of this old, dated fan (talk about an eyesore) and while I really wanted a chandelier, I compromised with my husband who loves to sleep with a fan on.
We installed this beautiful fan from Haiku and it’s pretty darn cool. First of all, it’s silent, which is great at night. You can control it with your phone or remote or by the wall switch. You can set it to turn off when you leave the room and I love how sleek it is. It blends in with the ceiling. It makes a big difference!
And now onto the fun stuff…furniture! I searched high and low for the perfect bed for what felt like (and probably was) months! When I set my eyes on this beautiful Drennon Platform Bed from All Modern, I knew I found the one. I love that it’s not upholstered—we have a dog and previously had an upholstered headboard and I was ready for a change. It’s big, dramatic and masculine, but because of the design, still feels light and airy. We got a Casper mattress and foundation, which we both love sleeping on, though this bed would also look great with no base and just a mattress.
As I mentioned last week, our bedding is from Annie Selke and the quilt is the perfect weight for this time of year. Our Euro pillows are from Target, the black-and-white patterned pillows are from The Mine and the fluffy pillow is from Wayfair. At the base of our bed, is my gorgeous, velvet, rose pink bench from Wayfair! It’s my favorite piece in the room, and I love the pop of color it adds to the space. Our Annie Selke rug grounds the space. It’s a great neutral and has a wonderful texture. It’s also really soft.
Art was something else I had a really hard time with, but thankfully my friend Kim Hovell is an artist and had this beautiful original piece that was exactly what the space needed!
I had a hard time finding nightstands that fit our space and also provided ample storage, but after searching high and low found the perfect pair from Candelabra! They are substantial and I think pair nicely with the openness of our bed. The lamps are from Target and the picture was framed and printed by Framebridge.
And finally, our dresser. What a beauty! She’s from The Mine and I’m in love with the herringbone pattern. It mimics the tile we have in our master bath and I love the tone and texture of the piece! The mirror is from All Modern and makes our room seem much larger than it is! I picked up the lamp at Target and the artwork is an original by Sally King Benedict.
