I couldn’t be more excited to be teaming up with an amazing group of bloggers to bring you all sorts of inspiration created from some really fun thrifted finds!

Is there any better way to spend a beautiful summer day (or any day really) than aimlessly wandering around thrift stores, antique shops or garage sales jam packed with all sorts of hidden treasures just waiting for you to discover them?

Sometimes these treasures jump right out at you and you instantly feel that need to bring it home with you.

But, more often than not, you’re forced to dig through all sorts of cruddy junk to find that one piece that’s just a little (or a lot) less obvious in its perfection.

Oftentimes it can be hard to see through the dust, dirt and datedness of an old piece.

Even after seeing some incredible transformations floating around Pinterest from some seriously awful starting points, I still struggle with this.

I find it so hard to look past what something looks like today to picture what it really could be with just a bit (or sometimes a lot) of work. Like impossibly hard.

As much as I love aimlessly wandering garage sales, thrift stores and antique shops for hours on end, I don’t seem to ever bring much home with me – either because I can’t see past the grimy, dated mess that it is or because I can’t justify paying an arm and a leg for that gorgeous piece that’s already been fully restored.

So, what did I come home with after an entire day of exploring the best vintage shops in the city a few weeks ago?

Five doilies.

Though I never seem to know what to do with the old treasures filling those thrift store shelves, I saw these pretty doilies and suddenly my head was spinning with ideas!

Friends, I can’t wait to share what I finally settled on…

And, it was so simple to make!

I started by tucking one of my lovely doilies (you can buy some new ones here if you don’t come across any vintage ones that you like) into a plain old embroidery hoop. After securing it as tightly as possible to ensure it won’t slip out, I trimmed off the excess that was left sticking out the back.

Next, I started wrapping some lengths of string (similar here) around the bottom of my hoop, creating some simple slip knots to hold each one on.

Then, I unraveled each length of string to create a softer, less perfect look. I chose to cut the ends, creating a V shape across the bottom.

Though I was loving the way this was looking so far, I couldn’t resist adding just a touch of colour by attaching a few green sprigs and a faux flower to the front with a few dabs of hot glue.

And finally, I finished things off by tying a loop of string to the top to hang it with.

I am head over heels in love with this pretty dreamcatcher! I think it looks so sweet hanging on my new farmhouse style memo board!

  1. Kristi – we would never have guessed in a million years that you get stumped in the thrift store! You always have the best creative ideas…like this pretty dreamcatcher! The doilies ares so soft and the one you chose to use looks beautiful on your new memo board. Great idea!

  2. Your “dream catcher” is truly a dream, what an awesome makeover. I saw this and had to zoom in on it in a hurry, can hardly wait to dig thru my doilies to pick which will use for this, gorgeous and genius.

Oh boy I get to use some of my doilies I bought in KY at shows and shops. I soon learned where to get specific items, didn’t have to go too far to do it. Bowling Green, KY and surrounding areas is mecca for vintage/ antique goodies, boy do I miss all my favorite places there. Have been here in CO since 2004 but have yet to find what I love as I did there.
Your extra touches with greenery and flowers really made this pop.
Now if you’ll excuse me have to go digging in doily stash. You should get gold star for this.
    Happy week
