Prior to starting blarejune.com, I often looked to other bloggers for daily inspiration….and still do to this day. Amongst the many lifestyle bloggers that there are, a Canadian blogger caught my eye with her soft and feminine photos in addition to her curated content. I never realized until much later that my favourite Canadian blogger who resides in Toronto, Ontario was not a Toronto native but was actually from Halifax, Nova Scotia (where I call home).
I had the pleasure of meeting Kaylee from theblondielocks.com during a recent visit to Toronto. Kaylee was kind enough to give blarejune.com an exclusive peak into her life as a blogger. So without further ado…..
blarejune: Hi Kaylee, could you start by telling us a bit about yourself?
theblondielocks: Hello Blare June readers! My name is Kaylee Giffin and I am the founder of the lifestyle website The Blondielocks. I am a 24 (almost 25, ahh!) East Coast gal who moved to Toronto around 6 years ago to pursue a career in fashion. Not really knowing what I wanted to do after I graduated school, I began to start dabbling in all kinds of topics revolving around life and style, which is how my blog was born. I absolutely love creating, writing and sharing my story and hopefully in turn inspiring others along the way. My life basically revolves around creating content for my blog, spending quality time with my boyfriend eating all of the Mexican food, and hanging out at the park with our dog Milo whom we are both slightly obsessed with.
blarejune: Can you tell us about your blog and what inspired you to start it?
theblondielocks: As I mentioned above, my blog sort of started out of me not really knowing what I wanted to do after I graduated from fashion school. I was home in Halifax for a few months, working part time in a local boutique and I was feeling sort of stagnant. I knew that I always had a passion for more than just fashion so I thought that starting a blog would be a great way to sort of learn and teach at the same time. My blog has always gone off the statement “curate a life that is just right” which to me means that anyone can create the life that they want to live. Whether that be through a beautifully cooked meal, a handy DIY or an outfit that just makes you feel amazing, I want women (and any men who read) to know that they don’t have to “have it all” to create a beautiful life.
blarejune: What do you enjoy most about being a blogger?
theblondielocks: I absolutely love having a little space on the internet that I can say with pride that I have created (with a whole lot of support). It’s crazy for me to think that people take the time out of their day to stop in and read what I am putting out there…it gives me all of the feels! I have never wanted to be someone who works “for the man” as they say, it’s just not me. I love being able to set my own rules and create whatever I feel like, and having people respond to it is just a dream come true for me.
blarejune: What is the biggest challenge about blogging?
theblondielocks: Hmmm good question! For me I guess it’s finding a balance between my work life and my home life. Because I work from home about 80% of the time I find it hard to separate the two. Because I set my own hours I find it’s easy for me to get distracted and then I end up working until late at night, which can be annoying because I probably could have gotten more work done if I stuck to a regular 9-5 plan, haha! One thing I find challenging about blogging in general though is trying to gain a large readership organically. The market is very saturated (which is great, don’t get me wrong) but it is hard to stand out. But I just try to keep pushing myself with what I put out and I figure, build it and they will come!
blarejune: Where do you find the continuous inspiration for your posts?
theblondielocks: I find inspiration all around me! I have always been a creative person but blogging has taken that to a whole other level. Instagram and Pinterest are huge sources of inspiration and other blogs of course. I try to follow people who are not only creative and take beautiful photos but who are also inspiring through their words. There is nothing quite like seeing a beautiful photo and then reading the story behind it to get a sense of who the person behind the lens or the blog is. I always like to say that inspiration is everywhere; you just have to look up.
blarejune: If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring blogger, what would it be?
theblondielocks: If you are thinking about starting a blog, I say just do it! I have found so much of who I am through blogging and I can only imagine more self exploration as I keep moving forward with The Blondielocks. Everyone says this, but I will reiterate it…don’t start a blog for the wrong reasons! Starting a blog because YOU want to is the most important first step. Also, don’t feel like your blog has to be perfect in the beginning. My blog was a complete disaster when I first started it and there are still things I am figuring out…that’s half the fun! You will learn so much from blogging, meet so many incredible people and work with so many amazing brands if you just stick to being you…allow yourself to enjoy the journey!
blare june: Where would you like to be as a blogger five years from now?
theblondielocks: I feel like I have some pretty ambitious goals for the next 5 years but I’m not ready to talk about them just yet, sorry haha! I will say that right now I have been trying to push out even more content than my previous 5 posts a week schedule. I have also begun to feature a lot more under the radar brands on my blog and I really hope to keep that going. I’ve become extremely passionate about unique, one of a kind brands with a story to tell so I really hope that my readers feel like it is a natural fit for me to start doing these feature stories.
blarejune: If you could spend the day with another blogger, who would it be?
theblondielocks: I have to say that I would choose to spend the day with Emily Schuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere. It was the first blog that I think I ever stumbled upon in High School (I don’t even think I knew it was a “blog”) and I have been a loyal reader ever since. I’ve been inspired in so many ways by Emily and I so admire her success in the industry. She has truly paved the way for so many other aspiring bloggers and I admire that so much. I think it would be so cool to take a peek into her life and see what her typical day looks like, how she juggles running a successful business and being a mom and just picking her brain in general.
Thank you Kaylee for this inside look! We continue to look forward to your posts on theblondielocks.com.
Blare June xx
