Full Moon Supper Series

Our Full Moon Suppers are inspired by seasonal abundance familiar to this territory, and produce that may have been used by early settlers in our region, and celebrate the close ties between traditional agriculture and lunar rhythms. With each full moon South Pond will celebrate the bounty and the land through dinners made with local, fresh ingredients of the season to create unique and delicious menus. Full Moon Suppers are served al fresco, under the stars with a bonfire.

Full Moon Suppers and Sharing Traditions. I am honoured to announce that Kim Wheatley, an Anishinaabe (Ojibway) band member of Shawanaga First Nation and Anishinaabe Cultural Consultant will join us for our Full Moon Strawberry Supper to share her knowledge and traditions of Full Moon Ceremonies.  Kim is Turtle Clan and a proud grandmother of 2 granddaughters and mother of 3 daughters. Her spirit name is “Shkoden  Neegaan Waawaaskonen” which translates to "Head/Leader of the Fireflower". Kim’s love of Indigenous hand drumming/singing and Anishinaabe traditional teachings defines her life journey and is always the framework of interaction that shapes her worldview. She is deeply committed to creating and promoting awareness of the Indigenous perspective utilizing her gifts of song, storytelling and Traditional teachings.

Chef McKenna prepares four courses profiling our own and local produce, meats, cheese, bread, beer and wine. Menus are based on whatever is fresh and in season and will be posted online prior to the dinner. Gluten Free and Vegetarian diets always welcome.

Served al fresco weather permitting.

Seasons on the Moraine

South Pond Farms is offering an exciting new series of events from April to October – eight guided/interpreted nature walks on the Ballyduff Trails adjoining South Pond.  The walks are designed to deepen understanding and increase appreciation of nature as it unfolds its marvels month by month here, on the edge of the Oak Ridges Moraine.

Visit the web site here

The walks are being led by eminent local naturalists – ecologists, geographers, botanists, authors and artists – all of whom have vast experience in interpretation.   Each event will also feature a “farm-to-table” meal, which is the essence of South Pond Farms.

The Seasons on the Moraine events are not-for-profit.  They are undertaken in collaboration with our neighbours, Jean and Ralph, and in cooperation with the Kawartha Land Trust which has been entrusted with the ongoing protection of their property.  South Pond Farms is a strong supporter of the Kawartha Land Trust and of its mission.

Each of the events is outlined below.  Some events are in the morning, some are in the afternoon – one is in the evening.  Participants are encouraged to wear boots and to dress appropriately for trail–walking “come rain or come shine”.  No other special equipment is required.  However, you are encouraged to bring a camera and binoculars if you have them.

Most events begin and end at South Pond Farms.  Some, however, begin at Jean & Ralph’s place (851 Ballyduff Rd.) and end at South Pond.  We will provide transportation back to the cars for those who choose not to retrace their steps on the trail.

At each event there will be a display table with information on:

  • The Kawartha Land Trust - Kawartha Land Trust - Protects the Land We Love.  The Ballyduff Trails, where 'Seasons on the Morraine' is taking place, is protected by the Kawartha Land Trust through a Conservation Easement Agreement.  KLT is also providing expertise through their volunteers as guides for some events. To learn more visit: www.kawarthalandtrust.org

  • Peterborough Field Naturalists and Kawartha Field Naturalists – providing expertise for the events and ongoing learning opportunities for nature lovers

  • Kawartha Conservation – managing and stewarding the Fleetwood Natural Area – the ecological heart of the valley.

We hope you will join us for at least some of these events and share time on the trail and time at the table with other interested and interesting people who care about our natural world.

Please click on each event for more information about the programming, schedule and any recommended equipment
